SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte, Mar. 12 — The participants from the local government units (LGUs) of Alegria, Jabonga, Kitcharao and Mainit brainstormed and drafted a unified Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) framework plan which includes the goals and management actions for Lake Mainit in Caraga region.

The three-day EAFM Orientation and Planning Workshop was conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – Caraga held in Santa Monica, Siargao Island on March 5-7, 2019.

Professor Reynald Gimena of the Mindanao State University (MSU) – Marawi evaluated the initial plans, which the municipal agriculturist, Aqua Tech representatives and Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC) members could present to their respective LGUs.

Asuncion Maputol, former BFAR-10 regional director, also shared her EAFM experience to the group citing the failure, challenges and success of Panguil Baywide Management.

“I can’t close my eyes on the illegal activities being done in Lake Mainit. So let us revisit; harmonize the plan; and act on it in the next few months,” said BFAR-Caraga regional director Visa Tan-Dimerin.

She likewise encouraged the participants to dream and work for these dreams for their communities.

“We can make a difference in protecting Lake Mainit. Let us not surrender. When our heart speaks, our mind and action will follow,” Dimerin said. (Salve M. Dinolan, BFAR-Caraga/VLG/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
